Basing on Snow – By Andrew Townley
To achieve this effect I first used polyfilla to create a rough area of
snow on each base.  Then, with a modelling tool I smoothed out the
snow around the base to give a more even appearance.
When the polyfilla had partially dried I placed the already assembled
models onto their bases, no glue was required as the polyfilla held the
models in place.  After allowing the polyfilla to dry almost fully I added in
some more detail with the modelling tool.
When the polyfilla had completely dried I went round the edges of the
bases with PVA, being careful not to cover the snow covered areas.  I
then covered the PVA with modelling gravel to fill in any gaps and to
give the appearance of a patchy snow covered area.
Leaving 24 hours for the polyfilla and PVA to fully harden, I sprayed the whole unit with chaos black.
To paint the base I started by painting just the snow covered areas with a mix of chaos black and skull
white (to create a very dark grey).  Then, with the same colour I dry-brushed the gravel areas around the
snow.  After leaving that to dry I did the same with shadow grey, codex grey, and finally skull white.  I
then gave the surface of the base a covering of ‘ardcoat gloss varnish to give the snow a shiny, wet
look.  To finish off I painted the sides of the base scorched brown.
