INTO the EYE
An investigation into the deepest and darkest nooks of the GW Universe
By Mike Brandon [July 2006]
Welcome to the third volume of ‘Into the Eye’, a look into the finer parts of the GW
hobby.
The ‘Rooney’ Effect
After witnessing a World Cup whereby the
nation was engulfed in ‘Roo’mania and all of
England’s World Cup hopes were put onto someone
who has never had a major impact on anything other
than increasing his bank balance, it got me thinking onto how players have the same type
of mindset when it comes to 40k. That is the reliance and dependence on one particular
model to win a battle, everything else being inconsequential, basically like Sven’s plans
with Wayne Rooney. A lot of players seem to fall into this trap, for example let’s look at
OGC’s worst player statistically, Luke Greensmith – he spent much of his plans relying
on a Dreadnought to win battles and this was evident in his playing style. If his
Dreadnought went down early his army would be stumped and quickly mopped up, only
when its alive do the rest of the troops do anything and even then its more of an
afterthought. You’ve perhaps sent his in yourself sometimes, selecting a key tank or
character and then bulking up the rest of the points with no real thought as to how they
might fit into a greater plan. Unfortunately this approach seems key in Warhammer, but
in 40k it is very different.
If your finding yourself stuck in battles, and being completely demoralised when
a large vehicle gets wiped out your approaching your army selection very wrongly.
Vehicles and characters etc can only enhance the deployment roles of your basic troops,
form example a Predator is a major deterrent for frontal assaults and consequently this is
perfect for covering an infantry advance. Flip the mindset however and Predators can end
up speeding off to their doom while the infantry they are designed to work with mill
around being picked off. Essentially you need to appreciate what counts in 40k, and that’s
the troops themselves, everything else is a boost for them (well maybe not in the case of
the IG…). Of course if you understand this already you can do what teams did to England
very effectively in the World Cup. Simply take out your opponents ‘Rooney’ and you
should be able to take full advantage of pacing them into annihilation as they have no
back-up or alternative and end up being utterly crushed.
In conclusion you should be careful to discipline yourself from falling into the
trap of being over-reliant on a single item, otherwise you’ll forever be stuck in a cycle of
being sniped by those opponents who know your Achilles heel and can rip it out in the
very first turn.
